Chapter Seventeen

Here, Kitty-Kitty

Sasha took a deep swallow of water and willed his headache away. Too much going on around him to process didn’t mean he could take the time out to rest. Appearing weak could damage the fragile peace between Neal’s tigers and the jaguars. Damn, but the rogue tiger sure had picked the least convenient time to appear.

Activity stirred at the far side of the soccer field and he followed the others over. A group of men came striding over the soccer field. Neal and Mitch paced along in the midst of the jaguars, Neal’s face like a storm cloud but Mitch’s like he found the whole thing amusing. Both he and Neal walked loose and easy, a contrast to the strutting of the Latino men around them.

Sasha cocked his head. Two separate groups walked across the field. Some of the El Gatos he knew, if only by sight from this afternoon. Another group of men followed a slender man who wore a cowboy hat, cocked a little off to the side. They wore cargo pants and tight-fitting waffle-knit shirts. Pistol butts peaked from under several of their brown leather jackets. The biggest difference, apart from their clothing, seemed to be the alert expressions on every one of their sharp-featured faces. For them the danger had not disappeared, only been postponed. From the look of it, they’d be ready.

The group stopped when the Padre and Felipe reached them. Sasha continued walking, slipping between the bigger men until he reached Neal’s side. A muscled arm tucked him close and he cuddled next to his man. Mitch moved up behind him, guarding their backs and growling when someone got too close.

Great.

That set off a chain reaction. Soon more growls answered him and Sasha wondered if the testosterone filling the chill air could choke him. A woman ran up and snatched the little girl away from Miguel, scolding in a low voice, the sound almost drowned out by the rumbles.

Martín clapped his hands and the growls lessened, though they didn’t silence altogether. They toned down enough to let Sasha relax a bit. He sent a soothing wave to echo it. Cowboy Hat looked at him and cocked an eyebrow.

After the Padre spoke in rapid-fire Spanish, most of the jaguars scattered. Some went back to the game, others to check on the children and women, while the younger ones huddled and talked among themselves.

The group with Cowboy Hat didn’t leave until he spoke in a quiet voice to them. A few joined the young men while the rest melted back into the tree line. They identified with the El Gatos, from the easy acceptance, but somehow seemed like a separate sub-group. His empathy told Sasha feline, but not jaguar. He couldn’t close his eyes to get a better picture, not this close to Neal and the jaguars, but he got the echo of some smaller cat.

Interesting.

Sasha did not pay attention to the conversation held in rapid Spanish around him until Mitch began laughing. Miguel glared and snarled at him.
